Gullfoss / Golden Falls

February 09, 2016

Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvítá rushes southward. About a kilometer above the falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step „staircase“ and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 m and 21 m) into a crevice 32 m (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 m (60 ft) wide, and 2.5 km in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running over this waterfall is 140 m³/s in the summertime and 80 m³/s in the wintertime. The highest flood measured was 2000 m³/s.

Gullfoss is approx 60km from the house and 10 km from Geysir.

Seljavallalaug

February 16, 2016

Seljavallalaug.

One of the oldest swimming pool in Iceland built in 1923. The pool is 25 meters long and it is located near Seljavellir. In 2010 during the Eyjafjallajökull eruption the pool was filled with ash but the next year a group of volunteers gathered and cleaned the pool. The pool is free of charge and it offers old dressing rooms but without showers. Be aware that the pool might be colder than you believe.

How to get there: It’s between Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfall. The turn off for the pool is on your left after Seljalandsfoss onto road 242. You should see a sign for “Raufarfell.” If you hit Skógafoss waterfall, you’ve gone too far! You drive the road all the way in until the road stops and the trail to walk to the pool. It’s about 15min walking inwards to the mountain.

Skógarfoss - waterfall

February 15, 2016

Skógarfoss.

Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland and one of the most popular tourist destinations along the south coast.

The stairs next to the waterfall mark the beginning of one of the most popular hiking tracks in Iceland – the track to Þorsmörk via Fimmvörðuháls.

During the the day many buses stop there and if you are unfortunate you won’t see much of the waterfall because of all the (other) tourists.  Get there either between 8-9 o’clock in the morning or later at night after 20 or 21h. You’ll still have more than enough daylight at the time to enjoy the view and less people around.

Reynisfjara / Black Sand Beach

February 09, 2016

The world-famous Reynisfjara shore, near the village Vik in Myrdalur on Iceland's South Coast, is widely regarded as the most impressive black-sand beach in Iceland.

Reynisfjara is a black pebble beach and features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns resembling a a rocky step pyramid, which is called Gardar. Out in the sea are the spectaculary shaped basalt sea stacks Reynisdrangar. The area is rich birdlife, including puffins, fulmars  and guillemots.

According to folklore, two trolls attempted to drag a ship to land but were turned to stone as daylight broke, turning them into into the Reynisdrangar stacks.

The ocean waves in Reynisfjara are life-threatening. Use caution and be careful.
